How To Prepare A Sales Representative Resume

A) Content

As someone about to prepare an entry level sales resume it is likely that you will have some or all of the following career assets:

  • Work experience - In sales, marketing, business development etc, etc for various companies.
  • Skills - making sales, giving presentations, negotiating, languages and so on.
  • Sales awards - that show that you are an achiever.
  • Qualifications - including school / university as well as subsequent courses that you may have taken after leaving formal education.
  • Industry affiliations.
  • Written papers and articles for online or offline journals.

All of this data you must capture, filter and present in your sales resume in such a way that it does two things. Your your resume must:

1) Be a concise and accurate portrait of your best and most relevant qualities that...

2) You present in your sales resume in such a way that it 'matches' as best possible the specification of the sales vacancy. This is called targeting or 'fiting to the vacancy'. Within the bounds of what is true you must fit your skills and experience to what you know about the sales vacancy.

B) Resume Format

In 90% of job resumes the chronological resume format is used, and this is the format that your entry level sales resume will take.

Basically a chronological sales resume presents your work experience in chronological date order starting with your current job and then working back in time. If you are a bit unclear about this then you'll find more info here sales resume format.

C) The 17 Resume Writing Rules

In my experience as someone who has spent a lot of time reviewing resumes, I can tell you that there are a lot of people who write sales resumes that do not understand the basic rules for sales resume writing. The ‘basics’ as I refer to them are a set of simple set of writing ‘rules’ that simply enable you to present useful information in your sales resume to the reviewer in a format or presentation that they most readily relate to.

In my Write a Killer Sales Resume manual I have distilled these basics into 17 principles that you really should adopt. There may be more than 17, but there is certainly not less. Simple things, but many people just don’t do them!

At the very least, as you write your sales resume, be concise. Keep it relevant and don’t include material that is off radar.

Write in the present tense for your current job. And write in the past tense for previous jobs.

What you are doing is presenting your assets – your capabilities for the vacancy that you bring to the table – in a manner that most resonates for them in the most readily accessible manner based on the requirements of a particular job vacancy.

Hopefully you are getting a feel for the way you need to construct and present your sales representative resume. You'll also find more sales resume hint's & tips here at sales resume tips.
